Bembridge Ledge
At low tide the extensive rocky
shelfs of Bembridge Ledge are revealed, as the tide goes out the
rookpools and shallow lagoons are formed. Which is excellent for
anyone wanting to go rockpooling or fishing! There is always
something to do on the beach especially at low tide. Dogs and horses
are allowed on the beach all year round, if you wish to enjoy the
beach on horse back Sally's Riding School is close by.
The rockpools that are formed
on the Ledge when the tide goes out, are teeming with life and just
waiting to be explored. There is a wide variety of shellfish
including limpets and periwinkles, crabs, lobsters, the very tasty
Bembridge prawn and anemones. (remember, nets, buckets and crabbing
lines can be purchased at the Cabin Cafe.)
Fishing is good on the ledge as
well, bass, conger, mullet and eels can be found
amongst the rocks. There is a sand gully in front of the Crab
and Lobster pub that can be fished from the rocks at low tide and
the species found there include bass, pout, ling, bream, dogfish,
turbot, brill, pollock and skate. The Bembridge Prawn is also
considered a speciality of the area and and can be
caught on the Ledge. This species seems to
be restricted to the local coastline here. All you need is a net and
a bucket and anyone can have a go at catching them.
Remember when you are out
rockpooling or just beachcombing and you come across something that
you can't identify, we have a pocket guide to the seashore and a
British bird book at the cafe and are more
than happy to help you identify your find. |
